What Is Idiopathic Hypersomnia?

Idiopathic Hypersomnia Treatment

At Arizona Neurology Associates, it is not unusual to hear from patients that they suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day. Very often the involved person does not have a clear understanding of what is leading to this sleepiness. But, if you suffer from this, you could have something called idiopathic hypersomnia.

Now you ask the question, what the heck is idiopathic hypersomnia, and what other things would Arizona Neurology Associates consider before settling on this type of diagnosis?

When Arizona Neurology Associates see a patient with a potential for this disease, prior to this diagnosis we consider other potential sleep disorders. There is a chance your condition could be the direct result of a sleep disorder that then leads to excessive sleepiness and not from idiopathic hypersomnia. Falling into this category are people who just can’t fall asleep, or those who do, but do not find it a refreshing sleep, this is considered insomnia. Breaks in breathing, or sleep apnea can lead to this similar looking condition as well, and sudden jerking movements or limp movement can cause this sleepiness.  It should be noted, that if you suffer from sleep apnea, it is a serious condition and you should treat it accordingly.

Additionally, there is something referred to as Circadian Rhythms and these can be a disorder where the pattern of your sleep is not in tune with your sleep patterns at night. This is a common thing for workers who are on rotating shifts, where their circadian rhythms keep getting disrupted by the change in schedule.  Ask us about it and we can provide additional information for your use.

When treating people for sleep disorders at Arizona Neurology Associates, we will consider the most obvious reason for feeling sleepy during the day, not getting enough sleep during your sleep periods. Not always the reason, but we know by experience it is one thing to consider when dealing with sleep disorders. There are plenty of reasons to feel sleepy during the day. And it is true that everyone is different, the needs change from person to person. What is always true is that whatever your particular sleep demands are, if they are not met, you will feel sleepy during the day.

The term you probably have most often heard related to sleep disorders is narcolepsy. This happens typically in a combination with loss of tone in the muscles which is a diagnostic indicator for excessive sleepiness.  And yes, we treat narcolepsy as well.

At Arizona Neurology Associates, we’ve had plenty of patients with sleep disorders, and based on our experience, any time you suffer from this or any other neurological disorder, you should contact us immediately so we can start a consult with you, and develop you treatment plan. We want you well, it is our passion for our patients, to see them living their lives to the fullest.
